Feast of the Souls or Night of the Dead

from October 29 to November 2

The Tradition that Defies Time

The Feast of Souls (Night of the Death) It is the most beloved commemoration in Mexico, but in Michoacán it is, above all, a solemn manifestation of profound veneration. This tradition is not just a celebration: it is the result of a complex fabric that unites the pre-Hispanic funeral ritual with the Christian custom of honoring the deceased.

The result is a unique cultural syncretism: a rite that has absorbed influences from Africa, Asia and Europe over the centuries, but has maintained a Purépecha roots unchanged in the Lake Pátzcuaro region. The rituals of wake in the pantheons and the placement of offerings in houses and tombs are the living manifestation of a profound respect for beings who no longer materially exist.
