Ubicación: Lake Pátzcuaro

The Mirror of the Gods 🌊

Just 4 km from the center of Pátzcuaro lies this body of water that is, without a doubt, the soul of Michoacán. Located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, it is one of the highest lakes in the world, and its history is so intertwined with the people that it even appears as a central element in the city's coat of arms.

According to legend, this lake is the gateway to the underworld and the mirror in which the gods gaze. However, it is a fragile ecosystem. Although it has suffered from climate change and human activity, it remains a place of breathtaking beauty that deserves to be visited with respect and admiration.

🏝️ The Islands: Guardians of the Lake Currently, the lake encompasses five main islands, each with its own personality:

– Janitzio: The most famous and vibrant, crowned by the statue of Morelos.

– Yunuén and La Pacanda: Peaceful havens, ideal for disconnecting.

– Tecuén: Small and discreet, accompanied by the islet “La Tecuenita”.

– Jarácuaro: The island that became land. Today joined to the mainland and accessible by road (as we tell you in its section), it remains a cultural bastion.

🐟 Underwater Treasure The lake's waters nourish a unique cuisine. Species you won't see anywhere else live here:

– White Fish: The king of the lake, famous for its delicate flavor and currently protected.

– The Acúmara and the Charales: (Called tiruhs and cheguas in their smaller varieties), essential for the local snack.

– Largemouth Bass: Known locally as “trout”, introduced but already part of the regional diet.

🚗 The Route of the 26 Villages: The lake is not alone; it is watched over by 26 indigenous villages along its shores. To explore them, there is a scenic paved road that is a delight to drive. It starts in Pátzcuaro and hugs the shoreline, offering spectacular views until it connects near Quiroga (on the road to Guadalajara). Traveling this route is to understand that the lake is not just water, it is a way of life.
