The quarry's backwater and the arches of the Portal de Salazar
On the opposite corner from the Temple and Former Convent of San Francisco, lies this charming little plaza, considered one of the most beautiful and peaceful in Pátzcuaro. Its design is a testament to colonial sobriety, inviting rest and contemplation.
Simplicity and Elegance The center of the small square is distinguished by a fountain with a round rim whose only ornamentation is its simple geometry and the quarry stone material. This central element defines the space, creating a serene meeting point under the shade of the trees.
Architectural Gem: Portal de Salazar Facing the wall of the Franciscan convent, the historic Portal de Salazar extends, one of the most interesting structures in the area. What is most striking about this portal is its organic character: its arches of varying spans (different widths) resting on quarry stone floors. This architectural feature suggests that the portal was built or modified in successive stages, adapting to the needs of the houses and businesses, giving it a unique personality that blends functionality with aesthetics.
💡 Photography Tip: The Plazuela is an ideal spot to capture the colonial atmosphere without the crowds of the Plaza Grande. Try photographing the Portal de Salazar, its irregular arches, and the stone walls of the convent for an image with a rich historical texture.
