Gertrudis Bocanegra Square (Plaza Chica / former San Agustín Square)

The real stage of sacrifice and the gastronomic heart

Popularly known as the “Plaza Chica”, this space is the second most important plaza in Pátzcuaro. Unlike the solemnity of the Plaza Grande, here you can feel the daily life, the commerce, and the memory of the struggle for Independence. Its location is strategic: facing the Public Library (former Convent of San Agustín) and next to the market.

The Exact Site of the Martyrdom Although confusion about the execution site is common, historical accuracy identifies this location as the scene of the events. On October 11, 1817, Gertrudis Bocanegra was taken to the execution wall on this very esplanade, which was then called Plaza de San Agustín. She was shot next to an ash tree that grew beside the convent walls, accused of conspiracy after heroically refusing to betray the insurgent network. Today, a monumental bronze statue in the center of the plaza honors her on the site where she gave her life.

🧐 Historical Curiosity: The Mystery of the Plaque It is likely that while walking through the Vasco de Quiroga Square (Plaza Grande) find a plaque on a tree that states that “She was executed there”. Don't be confused! Local historians explain that the plaque was placed there years later for reasons of civic protocol, since the Plaza Grande looked more appropriate for official ceremonies than the old market in the Plaza Chica. However, historical accuracy confirms that You're standing in the right place: her sacrifice occurred here, in San Agustín Square.

Story of the Heroine María Gertrudis Bocanegra Mendoza was born in Pátzcuaro in 1765. The daughter of a Spaniard and a mestiza, she broke the molds of her time: despite the limited autonomy women had, she became a key figure in the independence movement, serving as a courier and intelligence network until her capture.

Flavor and Tradition Today If the Plaza Grande is for strolling, the Plaza Chica is for savoring.

  • Quiroga Basque Market: Just steps away is the modern municipal market. It's a must-see for food lovers: in its food court you can try authentic corundas, uchepos, and white fish.

  • Renovation: Recently, the square has been restored to improve its lighting and stonework, recovering its dignity as a historical site without losing its popular essence.
