Parish of San Diego de Alcalá

Baroque, Porcelain and Priest Hidalgo 🇲🇽✨

This Franciscan parish, dedicated to Saint Diego of Alcalá, is the undeniable heart of the center of Quiroga. Its structure is the exact point where faith, history, and the incessant and colorful commercial activity that defines this town converge.

The Historical Corner of Independence Although it is a center of faith, its civil history has given it an unforgettable character: in 1796, this parish was occupied by none other than the Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla 😲, who served as parish priest of Quiroga before being transferred to Dolores. Imagine how much history these walls hold!

Architecture of Unique Contrasts (18th Century) Completed around 1750, this work is a jewel that blends Baroque style with surprises you'll only see here:

  • The Mystery of the Facade 🧱: Look closely at the side walls: they have inlays of porcelain! This feature is extremely rare in the religious baroque of Michoacán and gives it a distinctive touch, mixing the sumptuous with the popular.

  • The Ceiling of Vibrant Colors 🎨: The interior will take your breath away. The magnificent roof paneling is covered with paintings that illustrate passages from Old and New Testaments and the life of the Immaculate Conception, created with a vibrant simplicity intended for evangelization. It is a masterpiece of Michoacán folk art in wood.

  • The Treasure of the Underchoir: Don't forget to look for the sotocoro (the ceiling beneath the choir). It is considered one of the finest examples of woodwork in Michoacán, displaying reliefs of the Tree of Life and an image of Saint James the Apostle on horseback.

Heart of Crafts and Main Festival The atrium, adorned with yellow flags, is a constant marketplace of handicrafts in wood, sheet metal and ceramics. If you want to experience the party at its best, visit us on November 13, Saint Diego of Alcalá's Day. The patron saint's festival brings the community together for a three-day celebration with massive traditional foodchuripo and corundas!) que ejemplifica la cohesión social de Quiroga.

Our Recommendation: Before entering the temple, walk around the Parish to admire the porcelain details on the side walls, a detail that few notice. As you leave, allow yourself to succumb to temptation: the area is full of stalls offering the the most famous carnitas in Michoacán. A treat you can't miss! 🍽️
