🌸 A Secret Garden of 2,500 Colors 🌿
Just as we were leaving the star voyage in the Planetarium, don't put your camera away. Cross the Convention Center garden and get ready to enter a small tropical paradise in the heart of the city: the Morelia Orchidarium “Dr. and General Alberto Oviedo Mota”.
Founded in 1980, this is not just any greenhouse; it is an institution with more than 40 years of history and is considered unique in its kind in Mexico because it's open to the public 365 days a year. It's a living museum where the jewels aren't made of gold, but of petals.
🌺 Why is it so special?
Imagine a space where more than 2,500 orchids. The place is cleverly divided into three modules that take you through different worlds:
- The Exhibition Module: This is the main area where you'll always find plants in full bloom. This is where you take those picture-postcard photos.
- The Hybrids (The Color Laboratory): A module with approximately 650 specimens created through crossbreeding. They are large flowers, with intense colors and perfect shapes that appear hand-painted.
- The Wild Ones (The Native Treasure): The jewel in the crown. It houses more than 2,300 specimens of native species from the forests and jungles of Michoacán and Mexico. They are smaller flowers, but fascinating for their biological rarity.
👃 A Sensory Experience
The first thing you'll notice upon entering (besides the typical humid warmth of a greenhouse) is the aroma. Depending on the time of year and which species are blooming, the air might smell of vanilla, cinnamon, or citrus.
The best moment: Although it's open all year round, we recommend visiting it in spring (May) or autumn (October). At this time of year they usually set up their big annual exhibitions and the place explodes with color.
🛍️ Take one home (and learn how to care for it)
If you fall in love with one, there's an authorized sales area (only for hybrid species, as wild ones are protected). They also offer excellent service: The Orchid Hospital. If you have a sick plant at home, you can take it to expert biologists for diagnosis and treatment.
📍 Why visit it from Pátzcuaro?
Because it's the perfect contrast. In Pátzcuaro, we admire the lake scenery and pine forests; here, you're immersed in an almost jungle-like atmosphere in less than 40 minutes. It's a quick, relaxing, and very affordable visit. Ideal for wrapping up your stroll through the modern part of Morelia before heading back.
