🍬 A Journey Through Time (and for the Palate)
If you walk down Avenida Madero in Morelia—formerly known as "Calle Real"—a sweet, fruity aroma will likely stop you in your tracks. You're standing before the Candy Museuma space created by the traditional firm Dulces Morelianos Calle Real to honor the richest heritage (literally) of Michoacán.
This isn't just a museum where you "see" things; it's a place where you can smell and taste history. Here, among wooden and pink quarry stone display cases, you'll discover how cultural fusion created one of Mexico's sweetest traditions.
🥘 Of Convents, Fruits and Secrets
The history of sweets in Morelia is the story of two worlds colliding. The museum takes you by the hand from pre-Hispanic Mexico and its native species to the arrival of the Spanish, who brought sugarcane and new fruits. But the true alchemists were the nuns. In colonial convents (like Santa Rosa de Lima), the nuns and families of Morelia perfected the art of preserving fruit, giving life to the famous sweet Ate Moreliano.
The interesting fact: In the museum you will discover how this home-based tradition jumped from the kitchens of mansions to become an industry with steam engines in the 1940s.
✨ A Living Experience: What you will see
The museum is designed to transport you to the elegant atmosphere of the Porfirian era, with exquisite decor and costumed staff that make you feel like you're in the 19th century. Its treasures are divided into four must-see sections:
- The Colonial Kitchen (The heart of the place): Here, the magic happens in real time. You'll see a traditional kitchen with copper pots where ate (a type of fruit paste) is made by hand. The smell of cooked fruit is unforgettable!
- Sala de Historia y Maquetas: Un recorrido visual a través de maquetas detalladas que muestran desde la vida en los conventos hasta las primeras fábricas industriales.
- The Time Tunnel (Photograph): An impressive gallery with more than 130 old photos from the collection of chronicler José Antonio Romo. It is a nostalgic window to see what Morelia was like in the time of our great-grandparents.
- Cinema and Carriages: To conclude the experience, there is a courtyard with 19th-century carriages and a projection room that summarizes centuries of confectionery tradition.
📍 Why visit it from Pátzcuaro?
Because no trip to Michoacán is complete without dessert. If you fell in love with the pasta ice cream in Pátzcuaro, in Morelia you must surrender to the ate with cheese. Plus, this museum is the perfect place to buy it. authentic souvenirs: slices of quince paste, fudge, Zamorano-style sweets, and Morelian-style sweets. It's an ideal, central, and quick stop to enjoy with the family before returning to the calm of Pátzcuaro.
