🏰 A French Castle for a Genius from Pátzcuaro 🎨
Walking through the Cuauhtémoc Forest, among tall trees and paths, you'll suddenly come across something unexpected: a small French Romantic style castle which seems like something out of a fairy tale.
It's not a fantasy, it's the Alfredo Zalce Museum of Contemporary Art (MACAZ). This building, which is worth a visit in itself, houses the work of one of Mexico's greatest muralists and, proudly, native of Pátzcuaro.
🏡 The Summer House (1897)
The building's history takes us back to the Porfiriato. Built in 1897 on a peculiar triangular plot of land, this mansion was originally the summer residence of wealthy Morelia families seeking the fresh air of what was then the "Paseo de San Pedro." Its architecture is exquisite: sloping roofs (mansards), spiral staircases, and French-inspired details that screamed modernity in the 19th century. It was until 1971 when the State Government acquired the property to turn it into the city's first contemporary art gallery, opening its doors on September 30 of that year.
👨🎨 The Tribute to the Patzcuaro Master
In 1984, the museum presented a monumental exhibition that would change everything. It brought together drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and tapestries by the master. Alfredo Zalce Torres (1908-2003). The impact was such that, in 1993, the museum was officially renamed in his honor.
The Pátzcuaro Connection: Alfredo Zalce was born in Pátzcuaro. He was a key figure in Mexican muralism (the last of the great ones) and a multifaceted artist who captured indigenous life and the landscapes of Michoacán like no other.
🖼️ What are you going to watch today?
The museum is an interesting dialogue between the old and the new:
- Upper Floor (The Legacy): Here you will find the permanent exhibition of Maestro Zalce. It is the perfect opportunity to admire the power of his brushstrokes and understand why he is the most important artist our lake region has produced.
- Ground Floor and Gardens (Contemporary): The ground floor rooms host temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists (both national and international), creating a vibrant contrast with the house's classical architecture. In addition, the garden often features outdoor sculptures.
📍 Why visit it from Pátzcuaro?
Because it's like visiting a fellow countryman in the capital. Alfredo Zalce was one of those who carried the name of Pátzcuaro to the world, and this museum is his shrine. It's a quick and very pleasant visit, ideal to combine with the Natural History Museum (which is just steps away in the same forest). Tip from Visit Pátzcuaro: Look at the details of the facade and the balconies; they are the perfect setting for a photo with a nostalgic feel.
