Vasco de Quiroga Municipal Market

Modernity and Tradition: The new commercial heart of Pátzcuaro

Inaugurated in April 2025, the new Vasco de Quiroga Municipal Market is more than just a supply center: it's an architectural landmark that marks a new era for Pátzcuaro. With a historic state investment, this facility replaced the old market, offering a dignified, safe, and modern space, and becoming the largest market in Michoacán.

Contemporary Architecture with a Colonial Soul The building combines modern design with the identity of the Magical Town.

  • Structure: Two large three-level buildings connected by four pedestrian bridges and a central plaza.

  • Design: It incorporates quarry stone portals, tile roofs, and wood finishes, respecting the colonial surroundings. Its interior stands out for its natural lighting thanks to large domes and cross ventilation.

  • The Jewel: Don't miss the 360° Terrace on the top level, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the city and lake.

Market Days and Tradition Although the market operates every day, the tradition of the open-air market remains alive:

  • Friday (The Big Day): It is the most colorful and important day. Inhabitants of the mountains and the lake region come down to sell their products: from the five species of fish from the lake to cheeses, flowers, baskets, mats, and the famous volcanic stone molcajetes.

  • Thursday: Traditionally dedicated to wholesale, with merchants from Tierra Caliente and the center of the country.

  • Other busy days: Tuesdays and Sundays also see high activity.

What to Buy and Try (Quick Guide) With over 734 stores, you'll find everything here:

Services and Amenities This market is designed for everyone:

  • Accessibility: It has elevators, ramps and bathrooms adapted for people with disabilities.

  • Families: It has a playroom for children, breastfeeding rooms and a medical office.

  • Parking: It has its own underground parking for added convenience.
