¡Viva Mexico! Under the Portals: Cry of Independence.

September 15th

If there's one night when Pátzcuaro proudly displays its colonial beauty, it's September 15th. While the rest of Mexico celebrates the start of the War of Independence, experiencing it here has a different flavor: it's celebrating freedom surrounded by architecture that has witnessed history unfold, in an atmosphere that blends popular festivities with the elegance of our arcades.

The Night of the Cry: Street party in the Plaza Grande

The action is concentrated in the heart of the Pueblo Mágico: the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga. You will find yourself immersed in an authentic Mexican street festival.

  • The Atmosphere: The air smells of Mexican snacks (pozole, corundas, buñuelos) and the sounds of mariachi and banda music fill the air. The plaza is filled with families, tricolor flags, and the ever-present confetti eggs.

  • The Ceremony: Around midnight, all eyes turn to the balcony of the City Hall. There, the mayor repeats Father Hidalgo's harangue, naming the heroes who gave us our nation. It is an electrifying moment when the crowd responds in unison with “Long live!”, followed by the ringing of bells.

  • Fire in the Sky: The night culminates with a fireworks display and the burning of “castles”, illuminating the tiles and historic facades of the square.

The September 16th Parade

If the night is a celebration, the following morning is a time of civic pride. On 16September 16th,, you can enjoy the traditional parade that travels through the main streets. It's a very family-friendly event featuring local schools, security contingents, and, most spectacularly, the charros and escaramuzas on horseback, showcasing the splendor of Mexican equestrian tradition.
