The secret of Yunuén Island

EXTENSIÓN DE RUTA: La Utopía Rural escondida en una escuela.

If you've already seen the city's murals and climbed up to Janitzio, there's one last treasure left to discover. On the tranquil Isla de Yunuén, time stood still in 1930. Inside its small primary school, murals painted by Roberto Cueva del Río, the same artist who decorated the Teatro Emperador, are preserved.

What will you see? Unlike the monumental stone architecture of Janitzio, here the art is intimate and educational.

  • The Obsession with Progress: Cueva del Río captured here the cardenist vision of the “Rural School”: you will see scenes of children playing sports, hygiene habits and the productive life of the island.

  • The Context: The school itself is a jewel of architectural functionalism; large windows and abundant light designed to “hygienize” education.

  • El Contexto: La escuela en sí es una joya del funcionalismo arquitectónico; ventanas grandes y luz abundante diseñadas para “higienizar” la educación.

How to get there: Take a boat from the General Pier or the San Pedrito Pier and ask for a direct trip to Yunuén. Upon arrival, walk towards the upper part where the school is located.

Important Note: As this is a working school, access depends on class schedules and the friendliness of the teacher or staff member on duty. This visit requires absolute respect, silence, and a sense of adventure. You are entering the daily life of the community, not a museum.
