The Great Stirrup (Tariácuri Viewpoint)

A balcony on the top of an extinct volcano

Located just 3 kilometers from the center, El Estribo Grande is Pátzcuaro's premier viewpoint. Situated on the ridge of an inactive volcano (at over 2,400 meters above sea level), this site combines history, nature, and the most comprehensive panoramic view in the region.

History and Cardenista Architecture (1936) Its original name was “Mirador Tariácuri”, in honor of the Purépecha king. It was built in 1936, during the presidency of General Lázaro Cárdenas, as part of his vision to promote tourism in the area. The design was by the architect Luis Ortiz Lazcano, who imbued it with a distinctive rustic style: note the large stone kiosk, whose concrete pillars masterfully imitate tree trunks and branches, organically blending with the surrounding pine and oak forest.

The Experience: Views and the Challenge of the Steps The place is ideal for spending the day with the family, as it has grills and tables in the shade. However, there are two experiences that define the visit:

  1. The Panoramic View: From the main kiosk you can see everything: the checkerboard of red tiles of Pátzcuaro, the Lake Pátzcuaro, the islands and the surrounding mountains.
  2. The 400 Step Challenge: For the more adventurous, there is a long and steep stone staircase with more than 400 steps. This climb takes you to the top of the volcano's crater.
  • Note: The summit presents a peculiar landscape, historically eroded by sand mining, but offers an unparalleled high perspective.

Adventure in the Air Thanks to the favorable wind currents at this altitude, El Estribo Grande is also the favorite launch point for paragliding enthusiasts, who color the sky of Pátzcuaro on some weekends.

Access: It is reached by a picturesque cobbled path surrounded by trees, accessible from the Libramiento (suitable for vehicles and sporty walks).
