The Mirror of Two Worlds: Emperor Caltzontzin Theatre

Where the last Purépecha king and Spanish culture meet.

The Experience in the Room (Roberto Cueva del Río): Upon entering the auditorium, you are enveloped by the official narrative. Unlike other war murals, Cueva del Río painted a ode to diplomacy: the exact moment when King Caltzontzin meets the Spaniards. It is not a scene of submission, but of recognition between two noble families.

The Secret on the Upper Floor (Ricardo Bárcenas): Most people stay downstairs, but you should go up to the lobby and the upper gallery. There you'll discover the murals by Ricardo Bárcenas, the artist who was responsible for narrating the “Industries of Michoacán”. While history reigns downstairs, upstairs is where the people live: market scenes, fishermen, and traditional cuisine celebrate the economy and daily life of the lake.
