Saint Anthony Abbot's Day

January 17th

The colorful blessing of the animals

If you visit Pátzcuaro in mid-January, you'll encounter one of the most curious and joyful scenes of the liturgical year. On January 17th, Saint Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of animals, is celebrated, and the church courtyards are transformed into a living Noah's Ark.

A Catwalk of Faith and Nature Tradition dictates that families bring their animals to receive a blessing to protect them from illness and danger throughout the year. But what makes this celebration unique in the region is the creativity and affection of the owners:

  • The Decoration: As local custom dictates, the animals are not “natural.” Dogs, cats, cows, horses, donkeys, chickens, and even parakeets are adorned with colorful garlands of natural or paper flowers, bright ribbons, and sometimes even dressed in small traditional costumes.

  • The Ritual: The priest sprinkles holy water on the pets and livestock, acknowledging their importance in daily life and farm work.

Where to watch it? Aunque se celebra en casi todas las parroquias, los puntos más vistosos suelen ser el atrio de la Basilica of Our Lady of Health and the one from Temple of San Francisco. It's an ideal event for photographers and families.

📅 Date: January 17th.
