House of the Counts of Villahermosa and Alfaro

House of the Shields (Counts of Villahermosa and Alfaro)

Viceregal nobility and birthplace of a heroine

Located in a prime position on Portal Hidalgo, across from the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, this imposing mansion is key to understanding the social history of Pátzcuaro. Popularly known as the “House of Shields”, its presence reflects the great economic power of its former inhabitants.

A façade that tells stories Unlike other colonial mansions, here the heraldry takes center stage. The coats of arms of the Villahermosa de Alfaro and Ortega families stand out on its austere façade, intertwined with bands of mortar in relief. These artistic details were not merely decorative, but a public reminder that the owner held the title of Viscount.

Home of the Heroine of Pátzcuaro This house holds a fascinating historical irony: being the home of a noble family with Spanish titles, it was here that Doña Gertrudis Bocanegra de Lazo de la Vega was born. She would become the greatest heroine of independence in Pátzcuaro, sacrificing her life and her privileged position for the cause of freedom.

💡 Gertrudis's Route (Visit Tip): You are standing in front of her birthplace. To complete the story, we recommend walking a few blocks to Gertrudis Bocanegra Plaza (Small Plaza). There you will find the bronze statue erected in her honor, right on the spot that bears her name.
