March 14: Tribute to the eternal “Tata Vasco”

On March 14, 1565, one of the most significant chapters in the history of Michoacán came to a close. At the venerable age of 95, Don Vasco de Quiroga, the humanist, bishop, and defender of the indigenous people who forever transformed the region, passed away. Although history records his death in Uruapan, his heart always belonged to Pátzcuaro, the place he chose for his eternal rest and where his remains now lie in the Mausoleum of the Basilica of Our Lady of Health.

A Week of Culture and Gratitude Pátzcuaro does not forget its benefactor. Around this date, the city organizes a Cultural Week that celebrates the life and work of “Tata Vasco.” It is not an event of mourning, but of gratitude.

What activities will you find?

  • The Organ Concert: This is the star attraction. It takes place inside the Basilica, using the monumental organ. The acoustics of the church and the solemnity of the setting create an unparalleled mystical atmosphere.

  • Craft Exhibition: Honoring the legacy of Don Vasco (who taught the trades), a craft exhibition is organized where the best of the techniques he promoted are displayed: lacquer, copper, pottery and wood.

  • Traditional Music: The squares and cultural venues are filled with Purépecha music, recalling the cultural fusion that he promoted.

  • Civic Ceremony: Authorities and civil society mount an honor guard before his urn in the Basilica and at his monument in the Plaza Grande.

Location: Mainly in the Basilica of Our Lady of Health and Vasco de Quiroga Square.
