Quiroga Anniversary

Every September 10

Cada September 10th, Quiroga commemorates the historical change through which the former Cocupao became Villa de Quiroga.

The state decree is dated September 3, 1852; the local civic commemoration was later established on the 10th and continues to be observed on that date.

The commemoration recalls the new name adopted in honor of Vasco de Quiroga.

This is not a celebration of the “founding of Quiroga.”

The place existed long before.

Changing a name, preserving a history

Cocupao did not disappear because an administrative act changed the town’s name.

The new name added another layer to an older history.

Putting it this way helps avoid a common habit: beginning the history of a town at the moment an authority gave it a Spanish or republican name.

Territorial memory is longer than a decree.

The commemoration

Civic ceremonies and a parade are held every September 10, with details that change from year to year.

Visit Pátzcuaro should preserve the formulation anniversary of the change of name, clearly distinguishing the historical date of the decree from the present civic date.

There is no need to update an ordinal every year.
