If the Plaza de los M\u00e1rtires represents the 19th century, the Plaza Morelos is the symbol of modern Uruapan of the 20th century. Located adjacent to the main square, this open and monumental space has a history of resilience that was born from fire.<\/p>\n
What you walk through today as a wide esplanade was, until 1951<\/b>, the old market known as the \u201cPari\u00e1n Nuevo\u201d. A devastating fire consumed that structure, but the tragedy became an urban opportunity.<\/p>\n The Transformation:<\/b> Driven by citizens and the Tepalcatepec Commission<\/b>, the city decided not to rebuild the market, but to open the space to create a monumental plaza that would modernize the center.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The Inauguration:<\/b> On November 5, 1952<\/b>, with the presence of President Miguel Alem\u00e1n Vald\u00e9s, this new civic heart was inaugurated.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n The undisputed protagonist of the square is the bronze statue of Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Morelos y Pav\u00f3n<\/b>.<\/p>\n The Sculptor:<\/b> The work was made by the master Juan Olagu\u00edbel<\/b>, one of the most important sculptors in Mexico (famous for also creating the Diana Cazadora<\/b> in CDMX and the P\u00edpila<\/b> in Guanajuato).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Symbolism:<\/b> Morelos is represented standing, holding in his left hand the \u201cSentiments of the Nation\u201d<\/b>.
