It is the place where Uruapan pays homage to republican courage and where, once a year, it celebrates its indigenous roots with the largest artisan market in Latin America.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"6\"><b>Sacred Ground: From Temple to Monument \ud83d\udcdc<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"7\">Originally, this land was Franciscan property and was known as <b>\u201cThe Plaza of the Old Temple\u201d<\/b>. However, history took a tragic turn. <b>October 21, 1865<\/b>, when the defenders of the Republic who were fighting against the French Intervention were shot here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"8\">Since then, the place has been dedicated to his memory.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"9\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\"><b>The Monument:<\/b> On <b>October 21, 1893<\/b>, in an event filled with patriotic fervor, the obelisk you see today was inaugurated.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,1,0\"><b>The Design:<\/b> It is a marble sculpture <b>5 meters<\/b> height designed by <b>Gabriel Guerra<\/b>, with bronze details and high-relief busts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,2,0\"><b>The Heroes:<\/b> The monument honors the \u201cMartyrs of Uruapan\u201d: Generals <b>Arteaga y Salazar<\/b>, Colonels <b>Villag\u00f3mez y D\u00edaz<\/b>, and the Captain <b>Gonz\u00e1lez<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b>The Living Heart of the City \ud83c\udf89<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"11\">Although its origin is solemn, today the square is a vibrant and renewed space (with important works completed in 2011).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><b>Daily Life:<\/b> It is the obligatory transit point between the Parish of San Francisco and the Huat\u00e1pera.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><b>The Big Event:<\/b> During Holy Week, this square is completely transformed to host the <a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/tianguis-artesanal-de-domingo-de-ramos\/\"><b>Palm Sunday Artisan Market<\/b><\/a>, where thousands of artisans from all over Michoac\u00e1n exhibit their pieces, turning the gray of the quarry into a rainbow of textiles, clay and wood.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"14\"><b>\ud83c\udf1f Our Recommendation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"15\"><b>History and Crafts.<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\"><b>The Obelisk:<\/b> Go to the central monument. Reading the names of the Martyrs helps you understand why many streets in Michoac\u00e1n are named \u201cArteaga\u201d or \u201cSalazar.\u201d<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\"><b>The Best Date:<\/b> If you can choose when to go, do it in <b>Palm Sunday<\/b> (Holy Week). Seeing this plaza covered in handicrafts is one of the most powerful visual experiences in Mexico.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"16,2,0\"><b>The Circuit:<\/b> This square is your hub. On one side you have the <a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/parroquia-de-san-francisco-de-asis\/\"><b>Parish of San Francisco<\/b> <\/a>(with Sciddel's murals) and on the other the <a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/la-huatapera\/\"><b>Huat\u00e1pera<\/b><\/a>.
