On the Friday of Sorrows, for example, altars dedicated to the Virgin can still be found, signaling that the city is entering a different time.

Throughout the week, processions, liturgical celebrations, religious images leaving their churches, Passion reenactments, and other forms of devotion move through streets, atriums, and plazas.

There is not, however, a single Holy Week observed identically around the lake. Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan and individual communities preserve their own histories, practices, and timing. Understanding those differences is part of understanding the observance itself.

A history of continuity and change

Holy Week in the region has deep roots in evangelization and the religious organization of the colonial period, but it would be inaccurate to present every contemporary practice as though it had remained unchanged since the sixteenth century.

Confraternities and brotherhoods played an important role in religious life in New Spain. In Tzintzuntzan, historical research documents their participation in Holy Thursday and Good Friday processions, Easter celebrations, and other moments in the religious calendar. It also records penitential practices and different ways in which atriums, churches, and streets were used during Holy Week

The same evidence requires caution: some practices may have colonial antecedents without there being sufficient evidence to demonstrate an identical, uninterrupted continuity over several centuries. Research on the penitents of Tzintzuntzan, for example, distinguishes between possible colonial precedents and later documented testimony.

Visit Pátzcuaro therefore speaks of related histories, continuities, transformations, and new forms of organization, rather than claiming absolute origins or historical primacy that the evidence cannot establish.

Pátzcuaro: images that walk again

In Pátzcuaro, two of the most visible moments of contemporary Holy Week are the Procession of the Christson Good Friday and the Procession of Silenceon Holy Saturday.

In recent editions, the Procession of the Christs has begun and ended at the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, while the Procession of Silence has departed from the templo de San Francisco. Exact schedules and routes vary and must be confirmed for each edition.

The Procession of the Christs brings together religious images connected with different devotions in the city. Pátzcuaro's religious heritage includes sculptures made with cornstalk paste, a historically important technique in Michoacán. Each image, however, has its own provenance, age, and history, and they should not all be assigned the same date or origin. The monument record for San Francisco, for example, documents a cornstalk-paste Christ of considerable artistic and historical value.

The Procession of Silence has a particular relationship with San Francisco and devotion to the Señor de la Tercera Orden. The former Third Order chapel is documented as a seventeenth-century building, and historical sources also preserve the devotional tradition surrounding events attributed to the image in 1656. The existence of that historical memory does not mean that today's procession can simply be described as an unchanged ritual from that period.

It is worth looking beyond the procession itself: who carries an image, who walks behind it, which church it came from, and how the atmosphere of a street changes as it passes a church. Small details like these help explain why these practices continue to matter to those who take part.

Tzintzuntzan: a different Holy Week

A short distance away, Tzintzuntzan experiences Holy Week differently.

El former Franciscan complex, the Church of La Soledad, the atrium, and surrounding streets are part of practices involving processions, reenactments, and penance. Historical and anthropological research has paid particular attention to the penitents, community systems of responsibility, and the ritual use of these spaces.

Here too, simple explanations should be avoided. The existence of old penitential practices in New Spain does not by itself prove that every contemporary gesture is a direct survival of a pre-Hispanic ritual. Relationships among evangelization, community organization, and Indigenous practices must be examined case by case.

Tzintzuntzan therefore deserves to be understood through its own history rather than as an extension of what happens in Pátzcuaro.

Visiting with respect

Holy Week fills streets and atriums with people, but that does not turn religious practices into performances created for visitors.

Keep an appropriate distance during prayer and acts of penance, avoid interrupting processions, respect areas reserved for participants, and ask before photographing someone closely during a devotional moment.

A simple rule works here as well: there is no need to see everything.

Choosing a few moments, arriving with time, and paying close attention often reveals far more than trying to complete a checklist of events.

Explore Holy Week in greater depth

This entry is an introduction to a much broader observance.

Semana Santa en Pátzcuaro compendium. is our specialized compendium devoted to Holy Week in Pátzcuaro and the Lake Region.
