P\u00e1tzcuaro observes its civic anniversary every September 28th<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The date is deeply rooted in the city\u2019s public memory and has for decades served to commemorate one of P\u00e1tzcuaro\u2019s major moments of transformation during the sixteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But its history is more complex than a founding date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n P\u00e1tzcuaro existed long before the arrival of the Spaniards and formed part of the Pur\u00e9pecha world before the conquest. Nor is there sufficient evidence to state that the city was literally \u201cfounded\u201d on September 28, 1534.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An explanation long transmitted in P\u00e1tzcuaro connects the date with the process through which the city gained new political, religious, and urban importance under Vasco de Quiroga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That interpretation appears in local historiography and still helps explain the meaning of the civic commemoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sixteenth-century documentation, however, requires an important clarification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A royal decree dated September 28, 1534<\/strong> recognized Tzintzuntzan<\/strong> as the City of Michoac\u00e1n. As far as the documentation currently known allows us to establish, it was not an order to transfer the capital to P\u00e1tzcuaro on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The change came later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vasco de Quiroga was appointed the first bishop of Michoac\u00e1n in 1537 and took possession of the diocese the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1538<\/strong> promoted the transfer of the episcopal seat from Tzintzuntzan to P\u00e1tzcuaro. With it, the political and religious center of gravity of the province also shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A new urban organization, the arrival of settlers, and the building of institutions that would profoundly transform P\u00e1tzcuaro followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was a process, not a single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n September 28 therefore functions as the city\u2019s commemorative date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no need to turn it into a literal birth certificate in order to recognize its importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n P\u00e1tzcuaro\u2019s history includes a pre-Hispanic settlement, sixteenth-century transformations, its period as an episcopal seat and City of Michoac\u00e1n, and all the changes that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Celebrating the city also means recognizing those different layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since 1983, the municipal government has presented the Vasco de Quiroga Medal<\/strong> to people or institutions whose work is considered important to P\u00e1tzcuaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recipients and the activities accompanying each anniversary belong to the program of each edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n September 28 can be a good occasion to look at P\u00e1tzcuaro beyond the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, the Basilica, the former College of San Nicol\u00e1s, and the streets that grew around the new urban center allow visitors to follow part of the transformation that began in the sixteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The city did not suddenly come into being on one date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It accumulated layers of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And it still preserves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Civic date: September 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ceremonies, presentation of the Vasco de Quiroga Medal, cultural activities, schedules, closures, and the program must be confirmed for each edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Information for the next edition is pending confirmation.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Cada 28 de septiembre P\u00e1tzcuaro celebra su aniversario c\u00edvico cada 28 de septiembre.
