K\u2019u\u00ednchekua \u2014 The Festival of Michoac\u00e1n<\/strong> is not the same as Kurh\u00edkuaeri K\u2019u\u00ednchekua, the Pur\u00e9pecha New Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The present K\u2019u\u00ednchekua in Tzintzuntzan is a contemporary cultural festival promoted by the Government of Michoac\u00e1n. Its first edition took place in 2022, and in 2026 it reached its fifth consecutive edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n K\u2019u\u00ednchekua brings together in one program bearers of music, dance, song, ceremonies, and other expressions from different communities and regions of Michoac\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The participating traditions may have histories stretching back centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The festival that brings them together does not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That difference must remain clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An old dance does not make the contemporary show in which it appears old, just as appearing on a stage does not turn an entire community practice into a staged performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The festival takes place at the archaeological site of Tzintzuntzan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The choice carries powerful historical and visual meaning, but the Y\u00e1catas are first and foremost an archaeological and heritage site. The contemporary celebration uses the space as a stage; it should not be confused with a ceremony performed there in the same way in pre-Hispanic times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recent editions have included hundreds of participants from different communities, as well as a convite through the streets of Tzintzuntzan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program and invited communities change every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the strengths of the gathering is that it allows expressions from very different territories to meet in one place for several days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is worth knowing where each group comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A dance from Jar\u00e1cuaro, Zac\u00e1n, Pamat\u00e1cuaro, or Tingambato does not become a tradition of Tzintzuntzan simply because it is performed there.
