Popularly known as the “Plaza Chica”<\/b>, this space is the second most important plaza in P\u00e1tzcuaro. Unlike the solemnity of the Plaza Grande, here you can feel the daily life, the commerce, and the memory of the struggle for Independence. Its location is strategic: facing the Public Library<\/a><\/b> (former Convent of San Agust\u00edn) and next to the market<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Exact Site of the Martyrdom<\/b> Although confusion about the execution site is common, historical accuracy identifies this location as the scene of the events. On October 11, 1817<\/b>, Gertrudis Bocanegra was taken to the execution wall on this very esplanade, which was then called Plaza de San Agust\u00edn<\/b>. She was shot next to an ash tree that grew beside the convent walls, accused of conspiracy after heroically refusing to betray the insurgent network. Today, a monumental bronze statue in the center of the plaza honors her on the site where she gave her life.<\/p>\n

Story of the Heroine<\/b> Mar\u00eda Gertrudis Bocanegra Mendoza was born in P\u00e1tzcuaro in 1765. The daughter of a Spaniard and a mestiza, she broke the molds of her time: despite the limited autonomy women had, she became a key figure in the independence movement, serving as a courier and intelligence network until her capture.<\/p>\n
