On <b>October 11, 1817<\/b>, Gertrudis Bocanegra was taken to the execution wall on this very esplanade, which was then called <b>Plaza de San Agust\u00edn<\/b>. She was shot next to an ash tree that grew beside the convent walls, accused of conspiracy after heroically refusing to betray the insurgent network.
