Surrounded by the elegant viceregal architecture of its arcades and beautiful mansions, it is the social and cultural center of P\u00e1tzcuaro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>The Enigma of the Plaza Without a Temple<\/b> What makes this plaza unique in the context of New Spain is its unusual design: <b>there is no religious temple<\/b> in its immediate vicinity. This singularity is due to a deep respect for the original pre-Hispanic layout of the population. The lower, flat area of \u200b\u200bthe center was used for <b>commerce and housing<\/b>. The ritual and ceremonial sites, on the other hand, were located on the nearby hills, which is precisely where the great Christian temples were later built (such as the <a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/basilica-de-nuestra-senora-de-la-salud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQmgE\">Basilica<\/a> and the <a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/ex-convento-de-san-agustin-biblioteca-publica-gertrudis-bocanegra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQmwE\">Ex-Convent of San Agust\u00edn<\/a>) respecting the original Pur\u00e9pecha design.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"7\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>Architecture and Tribute<\/b> The plaza is a perfect quadrilateral, flanked by key historic buildings, including the <a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/palacio-municipal-de-patzcuaro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQnAE\">Municipal Palace<\/a> (the former Tobacco Customs House) and the <a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/casa-de-los-condes-de-villahermosa-y-alfaro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQnQE\">House of Shields<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>Fountains and Focal Point:<\/b> The space features several fountains, with the central one serving as the focal point.
