It is a site of deep religious and cultural tradition, famous for the legend that gave it its name and for the historical jewel it houses: the quarry stone cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>The Origin of a Tragic Name<\/b> The site takes its name from a historical legend that places it at a key moment in the Conquest. According to some historians, it was here that <b>Tang\u00e1xoan Tz\u00edntzicha<\/b>, the last Pur\u00e9pecha Cazonci (emperor), met and surrendered to the Spanish crown, represented by Field Marshal <b>Crist\u00f3bal de Olid<\/b>. Whether or not the act of surrender at this exact spot actually took place, the name <b>\u201cEl Humilladero\u201d<\/b> refers to this tradition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"7\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>The Christ of Humilladero<\/b> The heart of the site is the <b>stone crucifix<\/b> on a quarry monolith. This is known in Spain as a <i>humilladero<\/i>: a cross erected in a public place before which the faithful kneel and \u201chumble themselves\u201d as a sign of devotion.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0\"><b>\ud83d\udcdc A 16th Century Foundation Fact Sheet:<\/b> The cross's octagonal base pedestal is a historical treasure that reveals crucial information about the founding of P\u00e1tzcuaro, commissioned to be sculpted by the man himself. <b><a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/don-vasco-de-quiroga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"4\">Don Vasco de Quiroga<\/a><\/b>.
