Along the way, traces of the Stations of the Cross remain, and historical documentation on the Calvary chapel records the pilgrimage between the two churches as part of an annual religious tradition.

During Lent and Holy Week, this axis comes back to life.

From San Francisco to Calvary

The location of Calvary is not accidental.

Chapels with this dedication were often placed on elevated ground to symbolically represent the road to Golgotha.

In Pátzcuaro, the chapel completes the axis that begins at the Church of San Francisco. Niches and stations that survive along the route recall its religious function.

The present chapel was completed in 1666, according to the inscription preserved on its tower, at the initiative of the bishop of Michoacán, Fray Marcos Ramírez de Prado.

A route that has changed

The historical existence of the road and its stations does not mean that the Stations of the Cross have always been performed in exactly the same way.

Holy Week programs from different periods show reenactments, pilgrimages, and routes with changing schedules and forms.

In recent years, a living Stations of the Cross from San Francisco to Calvary has once again been documented.

The route remains.

The way of walking it may change.

The Lord of the Third Order

The Church of San Francisco also preserves one of Pátzcuaro’s most deeply rooted devotional images: the Señor de la Tercera Orden.

It is a crucified Christ historically connected with the Franciscan Third Order.

Heritage documentation preserves an old account dated July 21, 1656, according to which residents and authorities of Pátzcuaro said they had observed extraordinary movements of the image.

The file concerning that event forms part of the documented history of the devotion.

The interpretation of the episode as a miracle belongs to the realm of faith.

Visit Pátzcuaro distinguishes the two: the existence and recording of the testimony are documented; its supernatural character belongs to devotional tradition.

An important clarification

The historic Stations of the Cross from San Francisco to Calvary and outings of the Lord of the Third Order are not exactly the same tradition.

In 2025, the Brotherhood of Hooded Penitents itself reported that the replica of the Lord of the Third Order had taken part in a special Stations of the Cross only three times: 2014, 2024, and 2025.

Its presence should therefore not be presented as a permanent annual element of the route.

If it participates again, that should be stated within the information for that specific edition.

The road

Walking from San Francisco toward Calvary makes part of this history physically understandable.

The slope gradually becomes steeper.

The city falls away below.

And the old stations remind us that the route was designed for stopping, praying, and continuing.

Even outside Holy Week, the axis retains that reading.

Visiting with respect

When the Stations of the Cross are underway, the route is not a parade.

Participants may be praying, fulfilling a promise, or accompanying a religious reenactment.

Keep the way clear, do not interrupt the stations, and avoid constantly moving ahead simply to take photographs.

The best way to understand the road may be simply to walk it.

Next edition / Practical information

The Stations of the Cross form part of the Lent and Holy Weekcycle, but the date, schedule, exact route, type of representation, and participating images must be confirmed each year.

The participation of the Lord of the Third Order or its replica must not be assumed.

Information for the next edition is pending confirmation.

Una antigua ruta de Cuaresma en Pátzcuaro Entre el templo de San Francisco y la capilla del Calvario existe una relación que todavía puede seguirse caminando.
