Erected in 1938, during the rise of nationalism promoted by General L\u00e1zaro C\u00e1rdenas, it honors the life and tragic end of Tz\u00edntzicha Tang\u00e1xoan II, the last Cazonci (supreme ruler) of the empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>History of a Sacrifice<\/b> Tang\u00e1xoan II ruled the vast Pur\u00e9pecha empire when the Spanish arrived in 1522. Seeking to avoid a massacre like that of Tenochtitl\u00e1n, he negotiated a peaceful surrender (an event that tradition places at the current <b><a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/capilla-de-cristo-el-humilladero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQowU\">Chapel of Humilladero<\/a><\/b>), but his fate was cruel. In 1530, falsely accused of conspiracy by the bloodthirsty Nu\u00f1o de Guzm\u00e1n, he was dragged by a horse, strangled, and finally burned at the stake. His death was not the end, but rather the seed of later uprisings, such as the one led by his legendary daughter, Princess Er\u00e9ndira.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"7\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>Art and Symbolism (The Style)<\/b> The monument is the work of the sculptor <b>Guillermo Ruiz<\/b>, the same one who erected the <a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/el-ascenso-en-espiral-estatua-de-morelos-janitzio\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>monument to Morelos<\/strong><\/a> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/janitzio\/\" target=\"_self\">Janitzio<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> and stands out for its <b>Indigenous Art Deco<\/b> style, very typical of the post-revolutionary era.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>The Statue:<\/b> Standing 3 meters tall, it depicts the Cazonci with prominent indigenous features and regal dignity, wielding his staff of command and <b>gazing intently towards <a class=\"ng-star-inserted\" href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/loc\/lago-de-patzcuaro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahgKEwjJm_PI6qGRAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQiwU\">Lake P\u00e1tzcuaro<\/a><\/b>, the heart of his domain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\" class=\"translation-block\"><b>The Pedestal:<\/b> The quarry stone base is a bronze history book. Its reliefs narrate three key moments:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"8,1,1\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,1,0,0\">The meeting with Crist\u00f3bal de Olid (1522).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,1,1,0\">The torment and death at the stake (1530).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,1,2,0\">The family tree of the Tarascan kings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-path-to-node=\"9\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"9,0\"><b>Annual Event: February 14th<\/b> While the world celebrates love, P\u00e1tzcuaro remembers its king. Every <a href=\"https:\/\/villapatzcuaro.com\/visitpatzcuaro\/en\/item\/aniversario-luctuoso-de-tangaxoan-ii\/\"><b>February 14th<\/b><\/a> (On the anniversary of his execution), a solemn ceremony is held with dances, music, and offerings.
